Craig was born on February 2, 1951 in Oxnard, California, United States; the daughter of Volney Howard Craig and Allene Lee (Withers) Craig.
Craig received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1973. Three years later she earned her Master of Arts degree from the University California, Berkeley. In 1985, Catherine was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cornell University.
Craig began her career as an assistant professor at Yale University in 1985 and had held the position for six years. Also in 1985, she took a position of an associate professor at that university. In 1995, Catherine became a science fellow at Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute of Harvard University, where he worked until 1997.
In 2000, she was appointed a research associate at Tufts University and had held it for four years. Since 2003 Craig has been a president and chief executive officer at Conservation through Poverty Alleviation International. In addition, since 2013 she has served as a adjunct research professor at Washington State University.
Since 2014 Catherine has been a museum associate at Museum of Comparative Zoology of Harvard University. She is currently working in Madagascar and the United States exploring the potential of social capital and social enterprise to maintain communities who have been displaced from protected areas and where Natural Capital approaches are not possible.
