Jane Franklin was a tobacco worker on a family farm from 1942 to 1951. She also was a part-time librarian at Bailey Library in Bailey, North Carolina during 1948-1951.
In 1955-1956 she was a public information representative at the United Nations, New York City.
From 1959 to 1971 Jane Franklin was a freelance typist, proofreader, editor, researcher, and writer.
In 1972 she was an assembler at the National Semiconductor in Santa Clara, California. During 1973-1974 Franklin was a legal secretary at Grossman, Ackerman & Peters (law firm) in San Francisco, California. 1985Jane Franklin is a proponent of solidarity between the two nations (Cuba and the United States) and an advocate of the Cuban model of healthcare. During the 1960s, she and her husband H. Bruce Franklin became radicalized because of the Vietnam War and were regarded as leaders in the anti-war movement.
