Almasi earned her doctorate and Master of Education degree in literacy education at the University of Maryland in 1993 and 1989, respectively, and her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1984.
Almasi's career began as an elementary school teacher and literacy specialist in Maryland. In 1994 - 2004, she worked as an associate professor of reading at State University of New York at Buffalo. She has joined the College of Education of the University of Kentucky in 2004 and currently serves as the Carol Lee Robertson Endowed Professor of Literacy Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She teaches courses in literacy research and theory and research design.
