John Hartsock was born on January 2, 1951, in Takoma Park, Maryland, the United States, to John Kaus (a geologist) and Lydia Fetler (a foreign language teacher) Hartsock.
Hartsock attended Prescott College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1973. Later he attended the University of Maryland and received a master's degree in 1977. Hartsock completed his education with a Ph.D. at the University at Albany in 1996.
Hartsock served as a newspaper reporter with various publications, including Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester), Capital (Annapolis), and Winchester Star (Winchester) during 1982-1985.
He then worked for States News Service as a Washington correspondent, he covered Congress, Supreme Court, and federal agencies for two years.
Hartstock started to work as an assistant professor of journalism in different colleges until he settled at the State University of New York-Cortland in 1997. He still works there as a professor of communication studies.
