Boland received her Bachelor of Science degree from Fordham University. She also studied visual arts and graphic communication and design.

Janice Boland currently works as a writer, illustrator, and graphic artist for children. She has been working at Richard C. Owen Publishers, Inc. in Katonah, New York as a director of children's books since 1990. Previously, she has worked in editorial, art, and production positions.

Boland now also serves as a former school teacher and adjunct professor of writing and children's book illustration.
