A stunningly elegant and highly original debut collection of stories at once dark and poignant, funny and bleak. The story "Thief" begins: "When my mother removed her shirt in front of third-period honors English, I was in the classroom next door taking a test." Her reason --her students were reading The Awakening and she had stopped taking her medication. The battle against self-destruction, the struggle to transform loss into meaning, and the difficulty of connecting with others, especially those closest to our hearts, are part of what make up these beautifully crafted and, in turns, incisively humorous and deeply wrenching stories. In the title story, a man who transports organs for transplants breaks in a trainee and ruminates on his sometimes futile life-and-death existence. In "Dog Lover," a son has a quiet but smoldering battle of wills with his blind Vietnam-vet father over the fate of their dying dog. In "Sadness of the Body," an adolescent boy spends a deliriously hot summer with his alcoholic uncle and the uncle's young girlfriend, and observes the sometimes surreal schism between the body and the mind. Brown plumbs the hearts and minds of characters trying to make sense of their lives. He is a new and exquisitely talented voice in American fiction.

Brown"s second collection of 11 loosely linked short stories, Why the Devil Chose New England for His Work: Stories, came out in 2007.
Career
He has published two collections of short stories, and his fiction has appeared in magazines including Harper"s and The Atlantic. In 1996, he received a Stegner Fellowship to study creative writing at Stanford University. Driving the Heart After its initial publication in the Mississippi Review, his story "Driving the Heart" was selected for The Best American Short Stories 1996.
The story later appeared in the 2012 collection Boston Noir 2: The Classics.
In 1999, Brown"s debut collection was published. The New York Times described Driving the Heart and Other Stories as "bleak yet penetrating," adding that "each of Brown"s elegant stories echoes with the same quiet despair." The 13 stories are mostly set in and around Portland, Maine, involving characters affected by tragic experiences past and present.
Driving the Heart was a starred review in Publishers Weekly, where it was called an "extraordinary debut collection." The 11 stories set in the fictional town of Vaughn in central Maine are linked by geography and tone, with "weary, complicated souls" of all ages. Some of the stories were originally published in magazines including Harper"s, Epoch, Open City and The Atlantic.
The book was given an Aby Entertainment Weekly, and was a starred review in Publishers Weekly.
The Los Angeles Times called it "an exceptionally beautiful and devastating book" lieutenant was a suggested summer reading by National Public Radio in 2009. Three of Brown"s stories were named among the Best American Short Stories series "100 Other Distinguished Stories" in 1997, 2005 and 2010. Teaching Brown previously taught creative writing at Stanford University as a Jones lecturer, and at the University of Arizona"s creative writing Master of Fine Arts program
He is currently an associate professor at the University of Oregon"s creative writing Master of Fine Arts program

With the changes in narrative point of view within some of the stories, Brown has said he was influenced by the narration in the films of Terrence Malick – Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Lincolnshire in particular.
