(NEARLY three years have now elapsed since the publication...)
NEARLY three years have now elapsed since the publication of my first work, " The Law of Psychic Phenomena," in which I formulated, tentatively, a working hypothesis for the systematic study and correlation of all psychic phenomena. Before venturing to publish that work, however, I had devoted many years to a patient and thorough investigation of the subject, with the view of ascertaining whether any psychic phenomenon had ever been observed and recorded that was inexplicable under the terms of my hypothesis. Not being able to find a record of such a phenomenon, but finding, on the contrary, that every psychic fact furnished a fresh illustration of the correctness of my theory, I ventured upon its publication. Since then I have continued the search, aided by many able reviews and criticisms of my work, the result being that I have been unable to find a fact or an argument that militates against the truth of the hypothesis then formulated. I have, therefore, felt justified in appearing before the public again, for the purpose of carrying to their legitimate conclusions some of the principles laid down in " The Law of Psychic Phenomena."

The primary object of this book is to assist in bringing Psychology within the domain of the exact sciences. It has long been felt by the ablest thinkers of our time that all psychic manifestations of the human intellect, normal or abnormal, whether designated by the name of mesmerism, hypnotism, somnambulism, trance, spiritism, demonology, miracle, mental therapeutics, genius, or insanity, are in some way related ; and consequently, that they are to be referred to some general principle or law, which, once understood, will simplify and correlate the whole subject-matter, and possibly remove it from the domain of the supernatural.

(IN arranging the following essays and lectures for public...)
IN arranging the following essays and lectures for publication, their respective dates of production have been disregarded for the sake of presenting them, as far as possible, in a natural sequence. The first of the articles contains a statement of the fundamental principles of the author's hypothesis, and may be regarded as introductory to those which follow. It will be found that these principles are restated, briefly, in other parts of the book; but the repetition is due to the fact that the papers were written at considerable intervals of time, and for readers or audiences not always familiar with the author's theories. I have ventured, however, to eliminate much of the iterated matter, leaving only that which bears directly upon the subject under consideration in the article in which it occurs. It was the author's purpose to revise his essays before their republication in the form of a collection, but his life's work ended with the last page of "The Law of Mental Medicine." The revision, however, would have resulted only in amplifying and elaborating the applications of his hypothesis. He had no changes to make in its fundamentals.

( About the Book Legal history is the study of how law ha...)
About the Book Legal history is the study of how law has evolved over time, and why it has evolved. Legal history parallels the development of civilisations, and is a component of social history. Legal historians record the evolution of laws and provide an analysis of how these laws evolved, so that the origins of various legal concepts can be better understood. Some consider legal history to be a branch of intellectual history. Twentieth century historians assess in a more contextualised manner, much like social historians, viewing legal institutions as complex systems of rules, participants and symbols that have interacted with society to promote changes in certain aspects of civil society. Also in this Book Law office management refers to the management of a law practice. Law firms in the West tend to be composed of a single lawyer, of several lawyers, or of many lawyers, plus support staff such as paralegals, secretaries, and other personnel. Topics included in law office management are: workload management; staff management; financial management; office management; and marketing. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: • republish only hand checked books; • that are high quality; • enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that • are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. (IN attempting to fulfil a task so important, and from a l...)
IN attempting to fulfil a task so important, and from a layman's point of view so difficult, as that of outlining a scientific basis of Christian theism, I feel it to be due to my readers that I should state the causes which led me to undertake it, and the principles by which I have been guided in carrying it to a conclusion. It is scarcely necessary to remark that this book was not written for the benefit of those who have already found in Holy Writ sufficient evidence to convince them of the existence of an intelligent Great First Cause. Nor was it written to convince anybody of the soundness of the theory of organic evolution. It was written for the benefit of that large and constantly enlarging class of men who are imbued with the ultra-scientific dogma that nothing in either physical science or spiritual philosophy is worthy of belief if it is not confirmed by a series of well-authenticated facts, — a congeries of observable natural phenomena. This class of course includes many who are not themselves scientists, but who, having been unable to assimilate the logic of the theologian, pin their faith upon the asseverations of those scientists who claim to have definitely ascertained that there is nothing in man that cannot be dragged to light by means of the surgeon's instruments or the appliances of the chemist's laboratory; or upon the reasoning of those logicians who claim to have discovered, by the process of inductive inquiry, that there is " no logical necessity " for the existence of an intelligent Deity.

Hudson was born in Windham, Ohio in 1834. He was the son of John and Ruth (Pulsifer) Hudson. The early years of his life were spent on his father's farm and in the schools of his native town.
He was destined by his father for the ministry and was given private tutoring in college subjects with that end in view, but instead he turned to law.
He was admitted to the Cleveland bar in 1857 and for the following three years practised law at Mansfield, Ohio. He then moved to Port Huron, Mich. , where he began to practise law, but soon turned to journalism. He was in turn an editor of the Port Huron Commercial Daily, of the Detroit Daily Union, and of the Detroit Evening News. In 1866 he was a candidate for the United States Senate but was defeated. In 1877 he became the Washington, D. C. , correspondent for the Scripps syndicate. Three years later his career took another decided turn when he entered the United States Patent Office and from 1886 until 1893 he held the post of chief examiner. In the meantime he had become increasingly interested in psychology and psychical phenomena, and in 1893 he published his best-known work, The Law of Psychic Phenomena. Over a hundred thousand copies of this volume were sold and it served to popularize both him and his subject to such a degree that he resigned from the Patent Office and devoted himself entirely to lecturing and writing.
He is largely responsible for making the terms "subjective mind" and "suggestion" household words in America. His "hypothesis" was that all mental and psychic phenomena could be explained as the effects of the objective mind (the ordinary mortal mind) operating by the power of suggestion upon the subjective mind, which is incapable of inductive reasoning, but which is immortal and which immediately controls the non-cerebral organs of the body. This theory was intended to supplant the doctrines of animal magnetism, Christian Science, and other more primitive explanations of hypnotism, faith-healing, and other phenomena; and it served to recommend "auto-suggestion" as on the whole not a dangerous, but a therapeutic agency, whereby man exposes himself to his "higher and heavenly" faculties. But the popular religious uses to which Hudson put the ideas of the "subjective mind" incurred the enmity of the scientists and robbed the term of its experimental value.
Encouraged by his popular success, Hudson developed his ideas in a theological direction. In 1895 he published A Scientific Demonstration of the Future Life and in 1899, The Divine Pedigree of Man. In the last-named volume he attempted to expand his ideas into a doctrine of evolution. He explained the evolutionary, racial, reproductive, or altruistic, instinct as the work of the subjective mind; the instinct of conservatism or self-preservation, on the other hand, as largely the work of the human brain which is the chief organ of the objective mind. Darwin's principle of "natural selection" thus becomes merely a particular instance of the conflict between these two fundamental instincts. Theism is simply the assertion that the evolutionary instinct is the "divine pedigree" in man, or that man is made in the image of God.
These evolutionary speculations, however, failed to attract much popular attention, and Hudson confined his later activities largely to the Medico-Legal Society, of which he was a member, and to its Journal. In 1903 he published The Law of Mental Medicine and in 1904 his son, Charles B. Hudson, published a volume of his papers under the title, The Evolution of the Soul and Other Essays.
He died in Detroit.
