Yuri Tarnopolsky is a Ukrainian scientist and author.
Background
Yuri Tarnopolsky was born on October 14, 1936 in Kharkov, Kharkivs'ka Oblast', Ukraine, in the family of Ilya and Bella (Zelichenok) Tarnopolsky. In 1943, while his father was still fighting in WWII, his family returned to the ruined city. In 1987 he immigrated to the United States and now is the naturalized citizen.
Education
Yuri graduated from Kharkov Poitechnicum and moved to the city of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia. He got Doctor of Philosophy from Moscow Mendeleyev Institute.
Career
Since 1964 Yuri was the professor of chemistry in Siberian Institute of Technology in Russia, but he left the post in 1977. In 1983 he was arrested and sent for three years to a Siberian labor camp in Chita, 1000 miles east of Krasnoyarsk. In 1988 - 1991 he was a senior scientist in SepTech, Inc., Wakefield, Rhode Island, United States. In 1994 he was appointed senior scientist, at Technic, Inc., Cranston, Rhode Island, United States, and worked there until his retirement in 1999. His book Memoirs of 1984, written in English, was published in 1993. While he was in the labor camp, some of his poems were published in France and Israel.
Achievements
In 1985, Yuri shared the Liberty Prize of French PEN Club with Irina Ratushinskaya. In 1987 Yuri was named the honorary citizen of Chicago.
