He studied chemistry (Bachelor of Science 1976) and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1979 at the Facultés Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix (University of Namur), Belgium under the direction of Professor Jean-Marie André.

His research deals with the structural, electronic, and optical properties of novel organic and nano materials with promising characteristics in the field of electronics, photonics, and information technology. Jean-Luc Brédas is among the top 100 most cited chemists in the world, and is included in the list of the Highly Cited Researchers for Chemistry. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the Optical Society of America.
In 1997, he was awarded the Francqui Prize on Exact Sciences.
He is the Director of International Programs at the Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics at Georgia Technology
