Over the past 35 years, writes Annie Proulx (author of Brokeback Mountain and The Shipping News) in her introduction to this retrospective look at the photographic oeuvre of Jeffrey Silverthorne (born 1946), "Silverthorne has photographed authority figures, nudes, prostitutes, prisoners, illegal immigrants, border bars and cheap hotel rooms, carnival denizens, people in the fringe worlds of American society, moribund animals, himself and the dead. He is internationally known for the postmortem genre he pioneered, photographs of the dead that shocked and repelled even as they fascinated." Framed in stark and uncompromising compositions, Silverthorne's subjects often regard the viewer with a defiant indifference; his work melds portraiture with a kind of detached photodocumentary impulse à la Diane Arbus. In exploring marginal characters and milieux, he confronts us with our own sense of disgust and the grotesque. This volume also includes a contribution by Robert Frank and an interview by Detroit rocker Cary Loren.

In Nuevo Laredo, just south of the U.S.-Mexico border, complexes of sex clubs called Boystowns cater to American men, and a few Mexicans, who wish to watch women take off their clothes and perhaps to pay for sex with one of them. Photographer Jeffrey Silverthorne (born 1946), who has in the past made photographs of landscapes, still, lives, portraits of transvestites and of dead bodies in a morgue, photographed the women who sell their bodies nightly in the Mexican establishments for wages that far exceed what they could earn in the local maquiladoras. Lurid and unsettling, Boystown: The Perfume of Desire presents 56 color and 34 black-and-white images.

Jeffrey Silverthorne portrays his own aging body in strange situations, in the company of young nude women, often crowned by a head full of hair curlers. Susanna and the Elders (2004 - 2007) speaks of morals, law, and transgression.

Jeffrey Silverthorne is sensitive to atmospheres that convey the texture, the smell, the temperature of places. This is very true in the Tex-Mex series. Free from any documentary purpose, the Tex-Mex series deals with the Mexicans who attempt to cross into the United States, and with the prostitutes of Nuevo Laredo. Silverthorne’s work has a timelessness that renders the body sensual and glorious. He borrows from great painters such as Velasquez, Rembrandt, Goya, Manet – who have always influenced him much more than other photographers.
Jeffrey Silverthorne was born in 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States.
Jeffrey Silverthorne earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1969), a Master of Arts in Teaching (1970), and a Master of Fine Arts (1977) from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence.
Jeffrey Silverthorne began taking pictures around 1967. Since 1974 he has taught at Newton North High School in Newtonville, Massachusetts, and previously taught at Wheelock College, Boston, Massachusetts (1972-1973). He had his photographs published in "Directions for Leaving", written by Annie Proulx and first published in the summer of 2007.
