This volume is the third in the Modern Language Association's Approaches series to deal with Austen's work ("Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma" were the subject of the first and second volumes on Austen, respectively). It provides information about editions, film adaptations and digital resources, and then nineteen essays discuss various aspects of Mansfield Park, including the slave trade, the theme of reading, elements of tragedy, gift theory, landscape design, moral improvement in the spirit of Samuel Johnson and of the Reformation, sibling relations, card playing and interpretations of Fanny Price, the heroine, not as passive, but as having some control.

Marcia McClintock Folsom was born on December 18, 1940, in Evanston, Illinois, United States. She is a daughter of James Phillips McClintock, an executive in gas range manufacturing, and Marcia Lisle (Postlewaite) McClintock, a homemaker.
Marcia received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in 1962. Two years later, in 1964, she attained a Master of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1976, Folsom got a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
In 1986, Marcia was appointed a Professor of Literature at Wheelock College (present-day Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development), where, during the period from 1986 till 1993, she acted as Chair of Arts and Sciences. In addition, between 1993 and 1997, Marcia held the post of vice president for academic affairs at the same educational establishment.
Moreover, in 1981, Folsom acted as a visiting fellow at Harvard University.
It's worth noting, that, in 1985, Marcia published the book, entitled "Easy as Pie: A Guessing Game of Sayings", co-authored with Michael Folsom. Also, she edited several writings, including "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Pride and Prejudice" (1993), "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Emma" (2004) and "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Mansfield Park" (2014).
Currently, Folsom continues to hold the post of a Professor of Literature at present-day Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development (former Wheelock College), where she also serves as Chair of the Department of Humanities and Writing.
Marcia McClintock Folsom is a notable literary scholar, who is also known as the editor of "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Pride and Prejudice", "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Mansfield Park" and "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Emma", as well as co-author of the book, entitled "Easy As Pie: A Guessing Game of Sayings".
In 1977, Folsom received the Edward H. Ladd Award from Wheelock College for outstanding academic achievement and service.

1993Marcia is a member of the Modern Language Association. Also, she is a board member at the Jane Austen Society of North America, where in October, 2000, she was a coordinator of annual general meeting.
Marcia married Michael Brewster Folsom on June 3, 1967. Their marriage produced two children - Jamie McClintock Folsom and Raphael Brewster Folsom.
