Education

In 1987, Jennifer received a Bachelor of Arts in Victorian Studies from Vassar College. Later, in 1989, she received a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in English and American Literature in 1992. In 1990, Jennifer also received a Certificate of African Studies from Jesus College, Oxford University.

Career

Jennifer DeVere Brody was an assistant professor of English at the University of California, as well as at George Washington University. She also was an associate professor of English and African American Studies at the University of Illinois. Jen worked as an associate professor of English at the Performance Studies and African American Studies at Northwestern University and was a Weinberg College Board of Visitors Research and Teaching Professor there. She co-produced "The Theme is Blackness" festival of black plays in Durham, North Carolina, and curated "Ultra Super" at the Franklin Humanities Center at Duke University.

Brody joined the staff of Stanford University as a professor of the Department of Drama and Affiliate Faculty, Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity in 2011. The next year she was appointed Chair of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, the position she held for three years. Since 2016 she has been the Director of the Center for the Comparative Study in Race and Ethnicity.

Achievements

• Professor Jennifer DeVere Brody has taught and written about race, sexuality and the arts for more than twenty years. Her work has been recognized by the Ford and Mellon Foundations, the Monette/Horwitz Trust for Independent Research Against Homophobia and the Theater Society of Great Britain among others. Locally, she has contributed to Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project, Frameline Film Festival, Horizons Foundation, The Transgender Law Center and the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Center.
