Jennifer Fleischner is an American educator and writer, whose books for children and adults focus on the role of African Americans during the nineteenth century.
Background
Jennifer Fleischner was born on January 16, 1956 in Manhattan, New York, United States. She is the daughter of Irwin Fleischner, a high school principal, and Ruth Mintz Goodman Holman Fleischner, co-director of a children’s summer camp.
Education
Jennifer got Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from Williams College in 1977. She continued her studies and in 1980 got Master of Arts degree with highest honors at Columbia University. Three years later, in 1983, Fleischner became a Master of Philosophy and got her diploma with distinction. Five years later, she attained Doctor of Philosophy degree at the same university.
In 1990 Jennifer enrolled in Training Institute of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, where she stayed till 1992, when Jennifer began to conduct postdoctoral study at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Fleischner finished her postdoctoral study in 1944.
Career
Jennifer began her career as a publicity director in 1977 at Dover Publications in New York, United States. She held the post till 1978. Eight years later, in 1986, the writer started to work as a lecturer at State University of New York at Albany and held the position till 1988, when she was appointed an assistant professor. Jennifer served as an assistant professor till 1996, when she started to work as an associate professor of English and stayed there until 2002. Jennifer left the University at Albany and began to serve as a Full Professor and Chair of English at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.
In 1988 Fleischner also was an affiliated faculty member in women’s studies.
During the period from 1989 till 1990 she served as a visiting assistant professor at College of Mount St. Vincent. In 1992 Jennifer Fleischner worked as a Babcock Lecturer at Hartwick College. The following year, Jennifer acted as a managing editor of "Reading Theme Book Series" at Macmillan Publishers Ltd in New York.
Also, in 1994 she started to work as a visiting scholar of English at Columbia University and held this post till 1995, when Jennifer was appointed a Diversity Lecturer.
In 1996 she was promoted to a director of undergraduate studies.
Currently, Jennifer is a professor of English at Adelphi University.
