Jennifer Freyd was born on October 16, 1957 in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. She is the daughter of Peter John Freyd, a mathematician, and Pamela (Parker) Freyd.

Jennifer Freyd attained Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979, graduating from University of Pennsylvania. Four years later, in 1983, she got her Doctor of Philosophy degree at Stanford University.
Jennifer started her career as an assistant professor of psychology in 1983 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and held the position till 1987, when she started to work as an associate professor at University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Freyd held the position till 1992.
In 1991 she served as a counselor at DeBusk Memorial Center. The following year Jennifer was appointed a professor of psychology at the University of Oregon and she still holds this position.
Also, the same year, in 1992, Freyd started to serve as a counselor at Center For Community Counseling in Eugene, Oregon, United States. Later, in 1995, Jennifer was appointed a psychology editorial advisor at Microsoft Corporation in Washington.
She has worked as the editor of the Journal of Trauma & Dissociation since 2005.
Freyd also served as a member of editorial boards, including Gestalt Theory, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, Moving Forward, Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment and Trauma and others.
During her lifetime, Jennifer worked as an agency guest reviewer for National Institute of Mental Health and National Science Foundation.
She is a press reviewer for publishers, including HarperCollins, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press.
Currently, Freyd is a Principal Investigator of the Freyd Dynamics Lab and editor of the Journal of Trauma & Dissociation.
Jennifer Freyd is a member of the following associations: American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, Association for Women in Psychology, International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, Psychonomic Society and Sigma Xi.
Jennifer Freyd married J. Q. Johnson on June 9, 1984. He died in 2012.
The couple gave birth to three children: Theodore, Philip and Alexandra.
