Background
Born in Cambridge immediately after World War 2, my father, David Manning continued in the drapery trade where his parents had first found employment. My mother, Lorna, was a window dresser before I was born. We lived with her father, Meredith Charles Watling, a professional artist. I was educated at the Cambridgeshire High School for Girls, attended local art college and then married Bob Hockey, a psychologist, in 1967. Our children, Jo and Gareth were born in 1968 and 1971 respectively. I began an undergraduate degree at Durham in 1975 and pursued an academic career until I retired from the University of Sheffield in 2009. I now live in Sheffield with Bob, my husband, also retired.
