Kline began his career as a reporter of Ledger-Star in 1960. A year later he took a position of a reporter of The Washington Star. Then in 1968, Jerry was appointed a writer and editor of National Geographic, where he worked until 1974. Also he served as a director of communications at Conservation Foundation from 1976 to 1979.
In 1984, Kline became an editor of John Naisbitt's Trend Letter and had held it for eleven years. Since 1995 he has been an editorial consultant of the same magazine.
Kline is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha.
