Jerry Purvis Sanson was born on March 13, 1952, in Alexandria, Louisiana, United States. He is a son of Luther Purvis Sanson and Lois (Lawrence) Sanson.
In 1974, Jerry graduated summa cum laude from Louisiana College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Then, he continued his studies at Louisiana State University, where he received a Master of Arts degree in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1984.
In 1986-1988, Jerry served as an instructor in History and Political Science at Louisiana State University at Eunice. In 1988, he moved to Louisiana State University of Alexandria as an assistant professor, the post he held till 1991, when he was appointed an associate professor there. In 1996, Sanson was promoted to the position of a professor of History and Political Science at the same university. He continues to hold the post these days. Besides, Jerry is Chair of the Department of History & Political Sciences.
In addition, Jerry served as Huie Delmon Trust Endowed Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Louisiana State University of Alexandria.
Besides working at educational establishments, Jerry also held various posts at Rapides Parish Library, including that of a member of board of control (1989-1994), member of personnel committee (1989), member of finance committee (1989-1993), chairperson of long-range planning committee (1991), chairperson of finance committee (1992) and president of library board (1993-1994).
Moreover, Jerry penned such books, as "Louisiana State and Local Government" (1992) and "Louisiana during World War II: Politics and Society, 1939-1945" (1999).

1999Jerry is a member of the Gulf South Historical Association, Louisiana Historical Association, Louisiana Political Science Association, Louisiana Academy of Sciences and North Louisiana Historical Association. Moreover, he is a former president of the Louisiana Historical Association and a member of the Louisiana Historical Association Company of Fellows.
Jerry married Rebecca (Ryder) Sanson on December 14, 1991. Their marriage produced one child - Benjamin Ryan.
