In 1952, Patterson received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas, and then a Master of Arts in 1955. From 1955 to 1957, he was a postgraduate from Yale University, as well as from Columbia University from 1958 to 1960.
Jerry Patterson began his career as an assistant editor at Hispanic American History Review in 1954. From 1955 to 1957, Jerry Patterson worked in the manuscripts division of the university library at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. From 1958 to 1961, was a cataloger at Edward Eberstadt and Sons in New York City. From 1962 to 1964, Jerry was a staff member at Parke-Bemet Galleries, then, from 1964 to 1965, he was assistant vice-president, and was vice president from 1965 to 1968.
From 1968 to 1971, Jerry was a U.S. representative at Christie, Manson & Woods in New York. From 1980 to 1983, Patterson was a senior vice president at Sotheby Parke Ber- net, Inc., and also was a consultant in the Books and Manuscripts Department at William Doyle Galleries in New York. in 1996, he was managing editor of Artnews-letter and Consultant to the Library of Congress.
