Gorkin began his career as an associate editor of Look magazine in 1927 and had held it for fourteen years. Also in 1935, he became an editor of the "Daily Iowan", where he worked until 1936. During World War II, he worked for the Office of War Information, where he founded and edited a picture magazine for distribution abroad.
In 1947, Jess was appointed a managing editor of Parade Magazine. In 1949, he became an editor of the same magazine, where he served until his retirement in 1978. In 1979, Gorkin took a position of an editor of 50 Plus Magazine. In 1983 he returned to Parade as a consulting editor.
Gorkin was a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association.
On June 23, 1940 Jess Gorkin married Dorothy Kleinberg. They have three children and one grandchild.
