(A leader of the American Arts and Crafts movement, Arthur...)
A leader of the American Arts and Crafts movement, Arthur Wesley Dow (1857-1922) was a prolific artist and an inspiring teacher. His creative genius is celebrated in this elegant study of his work and its impact on generations of painters, photographers, printmakers, potters, woodworkers, and weavers. The book explores the full range of Dow's artistry, including painting, photography, and printmaking. Dow's profound influence on numerous students and colleagues, among them Georgia O'Keeffe, Max Weber, Edward Steichen, and Alfred Stieglitz, is seen in vivid reproductions of their work. In his teaching and writing, Dow stressed the Arts and Crafts aesthetic of beautifully rendered, well-crafted works that balance decorative design with functionality. This volume clearly illustrates those principles and illuminates Dow's continuing relevance to craft in America. NANCY E. GREEN has held positions at Williams College and Christie's, New York, and is now chief curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University. JESSIE POESCH, an authority on American pottery, is professor emerita in the history of art at the Newcomb Art Department, Tulane University 164 illustrations, 142 in full color, 91/2 x 87/8"
