Jill Nelson was born on June 14, 1952, in New York City, New York, United States. She is the daughter of Stanley Earl and A’Lelia (Ransom) Nelson. She grew up in New York's West Side, spending summers on Martha's Vineyard.
Nelson graduated from the City College of New York with a bachelor's degree in 1977 and went on to study at the Columbia School of Journalism, which she graduated from with a Master of Science degree in 1980.
Nelson started her career as a freelance writer in 1978. In 1986, she became a staff writer for Washington Post and worked there for four years. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, Essence, The Nation, Ms., the Chicago Tribune, the Village Voice, USA Today, USA Weekend, and msnbc.com. In 1990, Nelson returned to writing and now lives in New York.
During her career, she also was a professor of journalism at the City College of New York from 1998 to 2003 and an adjunct professor and speaker at Hunter College of the City University of New York, Harvard University, Tulane University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, St. John’s University, and State University of New York.
