Bengston received a BA in German Literature from Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1964. He also studied at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1964-65.
A freelance commercial photographer in Oslo, Norway, since 1975, Bengston was a copywriter/ translator/photographer with Young and Rubicam from 1971 to 1975. He served as photo editor for Associated Press in New York City, 1969-70.
Most of his work is black-and-white, small format, but recently he has been using Polaroid to document "my life, my friends and things which are close to me." He also taked landscapes in 8x10 format.
