Ferguson studied from 1972 to 1974 at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, and received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1976. He earned an MFA in 1979 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
A photography instructor at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in 1979, Ferguson previously was a photographer for Chicago Architecture Foundation (1978-79) and a photo archivist for the Museum of Albuquerque, New Mexico (1977-78).

He is a founding member of the Santa Fe Gallery of Photography, New Mexico.
