In 1948, Zeleny received a Doctor of Philosophy in philosophy and sociology from Charles University in Prague.
Zelený’s work is a valuable contribution and a good example of constructive modern Marxist scholarship, drawing upon materials which only became available in recent decades. Zelený taught at Charles University, VŠPHV, University of Economics, and Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (Československá akademie věd) Freie Universität. In 1981, he was admitted to the Československá akademie věd. Most of his work is published in the Czechoslovakian language. However, The logic of Marx, translated into English language and edited by Terrell Carver, was published in 1980.

Zelený retired from teaching in 1990, and died in Prague in 1997.
