Hanawa investigated the manners of treating foreigners before the Kanei Era (1624-1643) at the order of the Shogunate. An anti-Shogunate and pro-Imperialist samurai believed that Hanawa was investigating facts about deposed emperors with a view to deposing the then reigning emperor. In pursuance of this suspicion, he assassinated Hanawa.
