Harada Jiro was born in Matsuzaka (Mie Prefecture) in the family of a retainer of the Wakayama Clan.

Harada Jiro went to Kyoto around the Meiji Restoration in 1868, then studied in Tokyo. Also he learned waka poetry under Hirotsuna and Nobutsuna Sasaki.
Harada became a Finance Ministry official in 1875, resigned in 1879 and became president of the Seventy-Fourth National Bank in Yokohama. His ability recognized by Kaoru Inoue, he was appointed managing director of the Konoike Bank in 1902. After playing a leading part in the Kansai financial world for many years, he retired in 1919. With a fortune he had amassed, he established the Harada Sekizenkai Foundation which was devoted to promotion of learning and social welfare.
