Joanna Rožmitál is also known as Johanna of Bohemia. She was Queen consort of Bohemia as the second wife of George of Poděbrady.
Background
Joanna Rožmitál was born on July 1430 in Rozmital Pod Tremsinem, Czech Republic. She was the daughter of John of Rožmitál and his wife Ludmilla of Strakonicz. Her brother was Jaroslav Lev of Rožmitál. Little is known about her early life.
Career
Johanna of Rozmital personally commanded her own army in battle. In 1461 she had offered to send her army to help the Duke of Bavaria against his rivals. At a time before standing armies were common, she quickly fielded an army that helped fight King Matthew of Hungary, who invaded Bohemia in 1470. The Polish chronicler John Dlugosz described how she attacked Matthew from the front while her husband George pressed from the rear, and together the Czech armies drove him from the land. In September 1474 she indicated that one of the things she enjoyed about retirement was not leading troops in the war. She ended her career by coming out of retirement to help her husband's successor rule.
