Joel Meyerowitz, American photographer. Guggenheim fellow, 1971,, 1979; fellow National Endowment Arts, 1978, National Endowment of the Humanities, 1979-1981; named Photographer of Year Friends of Photography, 1982.

Meyerowitz, Joel was born on March 6, 1938 in New York City. Son of Herman and Sally (Friedman) Meyerowitz.

Education

Bachelor of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, 1959.

Career

Director in an advertising firm. Began photography career in 1962. One-man exhibition My European Trip: Photographs from a Moving Car, Museum of Modem Art, New York 1968.

Selection of photographs from unpublished work Going Places shown at Expo 70, Japan. Gave lessons in colour photography at Cooper Union, New York 1971. Commissioned by St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri to photograph Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch 1977.

Photographed Empire State Building 1978. Participant in Mirrors and Windows: American Photography since 1960, Museum of Modem Art, New York 1978. Images from Cape Light exhibited at Museum of Fine Art, Boston 1979.
