Education
From 1982 to 1984, Horn attended New York City’s United Nations International School. In 1987, Horn received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies from Massachusetts’ Williams College. In 1991, Horn completed her post-secondary education at prestigious Yale University, earning a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
Career
During her studies, Horn entered the workforce via an inaugural assignment with New York City’s Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. Inc. In 1987, she joined the ranks at the investment banking company as a Financial Analyst. Horn worked on various transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and public offerings of debt.
After college, Horn accepted the position of Director of Financial and Merchandise Planning for Saks Fifth Avenue. Between 1992 and 1994, Horn was responsible for financial analysis of the company’s operations, and worked alongside consulting firm McKinsey on expansion plans, merchandising strategies, and the company’s IPO.
In 1994, Horn became the Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions for Credit First Suisse Boston. In this role, Horn advised large-scale companies on strategic mergers, joint ventures, and restructuring. As a member of the company’s recruiting team, Horn worked to mentor female co-workers.
Relocating to her husband’s native Norway in 1996, Horn became a partner at HQ Norden Securities. She focused on equity research, and assisted various Scandanavian companies expand, merge, and grow. Four years later, Horn became a self-employed consultant and private investor, working under the name Greylock Management AS. Within this role, she focused on providing advice to startups in the retail market.
In 2005, Horn maintained her consultant status by working on various corporate boards, taking this venture to a full-time basis in 2000. Horn served as an independent Director for Norse Energy Corp. ASA from 2005 to 2008, Petrojarl ASA in 2006, Thoresen Thai Agencies Public Company Ltd. from 2008 to 2011, Mermaid Maritime Public Company Ltd. from 2009 to 2011, and Asia Offshore Drilling Limited from 2011 to 2012.
In 2013, Horn became the Sector Manager of the retail group at The Boston Consulting Group. Within this role, Horn managed the arena on a daily basis, and founded a female mentoring group for peers. Finally, in 2014, Horn assumed the leadership role as the Managing Director at Oak Management AS. She currently manages a family portfolio of investments, hedge funds and venture capital.
Personality
A firm believer in the power of philanthropy, Joey Horn has been actively involved in various charitable organizations throughout her life. During her stint in Singapore, young Horn served as a Guest Lecturer at Singapore Management University. She also served as an Advisory Member of the Contemporary Arts Council for New York’s Asia Society. From 2000 to 2007, Horn served as the PTA Treasurer at the Oslo International School, the largest international school in Norway.
Since 2012, Horn has been actively involved in the international charity Right To Play, which focuses on supporting children. Helping children overcome the effects of war, poverty, and disease, the organization champions the benefits of play. Bringing opportunities to children in 15 countries, the international non-profit organization empowers children to protect themselves against HIV, helps child laborers return to school, and encourages young girls to resist early marriage in order to stay in school.
Since 2018, Horn has also been an active supporter of the non-profit organization, Restore The Music UK. This British-based charity provides resources for London-area public schools, to be utilized for purchase of musical instruments, and infrastructure to successfully operate a music education program. In 2019, Horn chaired the annual Gala committee, preparing for the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, the Restore The Music Gala.
In addition to focusing on these charities, Horn has been actively involved with Mothers2Mothers, which empowers young women living with HIV/AIDS to become community healthcare ambassadors, providing care for local women and children in Sub-Saharan African nations. Additionally, Horn is actively involved with Cancer Research UK, an organization that provides Oncology research opportunities, and seeks to eradicate cancer.
Art Appreciation And Creative Expression
Joey Horn is a collector of international modern art, and supports many renowned artists. Her expansive art collection includes numerous pieces from female artists from Norway, China, and India. Among her favorites, Horn cites Nalini Malani, Shilpa Gupta, Anju Dodiya and Chitra Ganesh. In addition to collecting art, Horn lends opportunities for young musicians to engage in their craft as a sponsor. She supports indie-rock artists Darlingside, and trumpet artist Jonathan Dely.
