Jose Eduardo B. Antonio is a Filipino businessman, real-estate developer, and diplomat. He founded Century Properties and served as its executive chairman, helping introduce new residential and mixed-use development concepts in the Philippines. He also served as a Philippine special envoy for trade and economic relations with China and the United States.
Background
Antonio was born in 1946 in the Philippines. He has described growing up in humble circumstances and receiving scholarship assistance that enabled him to pursue higher education. His early experience of building a career through education and business shaped the practical, opportunity-focused outlook that later characterized his entrepreneurial work.
Education
Antonio attended Don Bosco Mandaluyong High School. The Don Bosco educational tradition in the Philippines developed from the Salesian emphasis on technical instruction, discipline, character formation, and preparation for practical working life.
He graduated cum laude from San Beda College in Manila in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Commercial Science, majoring in Marketing. San Beda, founded by Benedictine monks in 1901, combined liberal education with Catholic formation and had become one of the Philippines' established private colleges by the time of Antonio's studies.
He received a Master of Science in Business Management from the Ateneo de Manila Graduate School of Business in 1968. Ateneo's graduate business school was part of the Jesuit university tradition, which emphasized management education, professional responsibility, and service. In 2003, Antonio completed Harvard University's Owner/President Management Program, an executive program designed for leaders of established businesses.
Antonio began his professional career in 1968 as a management consultant with Warner Barnes Company Limited. He then worked as a stock broker at the Philippines Stock Exchange from 1969 to 1979. In the 1980s he entered real-estate brokerage and development, buying and selling houses and developing town houses and subdivisions before establishing his own property company.
Antonio founded Century Properties in 1986 with modest initial capital and six employees. The company developed property-management and real-estate services and introduced international standards and new formats to the Philippine market. Its projects included transportation-oriented residential development with direct access to the Metro Rail Transit, fully fitted and furnished condominiums, Wi-Fi-integrated residential development, and medical arts buildings. Century Properties later expanded into residential, commercial, mixed-use, property-management, automobile, transport, and aviation-related businesses.
Antonio remained chairman and chief executive during the company's first 33 years. In 2019, Jose Marco R. Antonio succeeded him as president and chief executive officer, while Jose Eduardo B. Antonio became executive chairman. Antonio has also chaired Century Asia Corporation, Prestige Cars, Inc., and Philtranco Service Enterprises, and has served as vice chairman of Penta Pacific Realty Corporation and Subic Air Charter, Inc.
His public service has focused on economic and commercial diplomacy. In 2005, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him the Philippines' special envoy for trade and economics to the People's Republic of China, where his work involved promoting business and investment links. President Rodrigo Duterte appointed him special envoy to the United States effective October 28, 2016, with a mandate to strengthen Philippine-American business and economic relations.

Antonio founded Century Properties in 1986 and developed it from a small operation with six employees into one of the Philippines' leading privately held real-estate companies.
