After completing his Abitur during WW II Dietrich was conscripted as a soldier to take part in the war at the eastern front, where he was severely wounded. Being a war veteran he began to study philosophy, theology, natural sciences and medicine in Munich, Bamberg and Erlangen. He graduated in Medicine on April 1st, 1952 in Erlangen.
Shortly after WW2 Dietrich worked in the hygiene institute of the University of Magdeburg. From the 1950ies to the early 1960ies he worked at the gynaecological department of the University of Würzburg. He changed to Bad Aibling to become head of the gynaecological and obstetrics department of the Bad Aibling municipal hospital, where he also established a spa department. As a lecturer of the University of Munich, he organised a series of courses in balneogynaecology.

Johannes Dietrich was married to the pediatrician Irmingard Dietrich-Meggendorfer. The couple had three children.
