Johannes Heisig was born on April 23, 1953, in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. He is a son of Bernhard Heisig, known for teaching many representatives of the New Leipzig School.
A son of an artist and art educator, Johannes Heisig was surrounded by all the art attributes since his early childhood.
He studied painting and graphics at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (Academy of Graphic Design and Book Art) from 1973 to 1977. He also developed his skills at the workshop of his father, Bernhard Heisig.
Then, he spent a couple of years at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Gerhard Kettner. In 1979, Heisig received a one-year scholarship at the F+F School for Art and Media Design in Zurich.
Johannes Heisig has regularly exhibited since the 1980s. He has shown his art throughout Germany, Austria, including several exhibitions in India, United Kingdom, China, France, and Switzerland.
Heisig combined his activity of an artist with academical career. In 1980, he joined the staff of the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts first as a lecturer on painting and graphics and held that post till 1991. Seven years after he joined the university, Heisig was named Dean of the Academy’s Painting Department serving in that capacity for a couple of years. By 1988, Heisig had become a full professor of painting and graphics and headed the Academy a year later. He held both posts till 1991.
The artist has also been a guest lecturer at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, Norway, and at the Technical University of Dortmund where he taught painting from 2003 to 2004.
Nowadays, Heisig lives and works in Berlin where his art is represented by Galerie Son.
