( About the Book The history of Christianity concerns the...)
About the Book The history of Christianity concerns the Christian religion, with its various denominations, from the life of Jesus Christ in the 1st century to the present. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christianity spread to all of Europe in the Middle Ages, and since the Renaissance, has expanded throughout the world and become the world's largest religion (with over 2 billion faithful). At first persecuted, but later embraced by the Roman Empire, the East-West Schism, or Great Schism of 1054, separated the Church into Western (Latin) and Eastern (Greek) branches, i.e., Western Catholicism (based on Rome) and Eastern Orthodoxy (based on Constantinople). The rise of Islam resulted in a number of Crusades fought by Christian Armies from Europe, whose aim was to re-capture and hold Jerusalem. In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Christianity was almost completely removed from the territory that now comprises Turkey. The three most important traditions that emerged from the Protestant Reformation (1521-1610) were the Lutheran, Reformed (Calvinist, Presbyterian, etc.), and Anglican traditions. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from The Class Leader: His Work and How to Do It; With Illustrations of Principles, Needs, Methods, and Results In addition to the above list of valuable original' docu ments, I have gathered, chiefly from the files of the Christian Advocate, where they were scattered in frag mentary and ephemeral form through many years, some of the best thoughts of several of our greatest thinkers on this subject. These I have appropriated to my purpose, with proper acknowledgment. Valuable ideas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was born on December 6, 1835 in Deerfield, New York, United States.
His educational advantages were restricted to the country school. He early developed an oratorical gift, and at the age of eighteen became a preacher.
Atkinson joined the New Jersey Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1853.
He held pastorates in numerous small towns in New Jersey, in Newark, in Jersey City, in Chicago, in Bay City, Michigan, and again in Newark, and in Jersey City.
His first books were the outcome of his work as pastor: The Living Way (1856), The Garden of Sorrows (1868), and The Class Leader (1875). Permanently important were his histories. Memorials of Methodism in New Jersey (1860) unearthed interesting facts and incidents.
The Centennial History of American Methodism, 1784-1816 (1884) was unfortunate only in its title, suggested by the celebration of the centennial organization of the church. For the first time from a Methodist Episcopal hand the facts and their true interpretation were recorded. This notable book has not received the attention it deserves.
More elaborate is The Beginnings of the Wesleyan Movement in America 1766-73 (1896), where the story is told with a devotion, particularity, historical sense, and investigation worthy of all praise.
He was also something of a poet, and his hymn "Shall We Meet Beyond the River?" is known in all English-speaking countries.
At the time of his death he was pastor in Haverstraw, New York.

Atkinson was a strong and popular preacher, fervent, sometimes fiery, inclined to speak everywhere as though addressing a congregation.
Physical characteristics: he was beecher-like in appearance, tall, with large smooth face, long hair, and splendid voice.
There is no records of Atkinson's parents or family. It is only known that he married Catharine O'Hanlon in 1856.
