He was born December 12, 1837 in Oxford, England, to a tradesman.
John was educated at Magdalen College School and Jesus College, Oxford.
He was very interested in medieval English history and in 1874 published his Short History of the English People. Writing in delightful English, he fused together in a swiftly moving narrative the aspects of English life. Unfortunately, in the earlier part of the history, Green was often led astray by unreliable authorities, and his book is today a literary rather than an historical classic. He enlarged his work to four volumes in A History of the English People (1877 - 1880) and did more detailed studies in The Making of England (1882) and The Conquest of England (1883).
