Founded in 1764 as Rhode Island College in Warren, Rhode Island, Brown is among the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. Its founding charter barred religious tests for students, and the institution took the Brown name in 1804 after a gift from Nicholas Brown Jr. It is now a member of the Ivy League.
He then studied at Boston College, where he received a Juris Doctor in 1986. Boston College Law School was formally established in 1929 as part of the Jesuit, Catholic university, whose 1863 charter had included provisions for a law school. The school opened in Boston's Lawyer's Building, received American Bar Association accreditation in 1932, and has grounded its legal education in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition.
