Campbell was born in Glasgow and began his football career at Celtic in 1890 where he won two league championship titles in season 1892-1893 and season 1893-1894 as well as the Scottish Cup in 1893.

Just days later he had the honour of scoring the first goal at Villa Park. He moved to Third Lanark in 1903 and helped them to league title in his first season with the club Campbell was capped 12 times by Scotland between 1893 and 1903.
He scored four goals, including two against Ireland in March 1900.
He captained Scotland against Wales in 1902
He retired in 1906.
