Education

John Edward Carothers graduated in 1930 from Asbury College. He earned his master's and a doctorate degree in theology at Iliff School of Theology.

Career

John Edward Carothers was ordained a minister in 1932 and served in Colorado, Vermont and New York.

Carothers, who took a keen interest in theology's relationship to economics, science, and technology, published several books. His book, Personal Religious Living, was published in 1948, and his 1966 Keepers of the Poor followed next; that same year came his Can Machines Replace Man? and his To Love or to Perish, a book he wrote with Margaret Mead, Roger L. Shinn, and Daniel D. McCracken, appeared in 1972.

An active member of the National Council of Churches during the 1950s and 1960s, Carothers also served as a chief executive of the United Methodist Church National Missions from 1964 to 1972.
