(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

John White Chadwick was born on October 19, 1840 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, United States. He was the son of John White Chadwick, mentioned as a seaman or sea-captain, and Jane (Standley) Chadwick.
Early apprenticed to a shoemaker, he felt a desire for more learning, entered the State Normal School at Bridgewater in 1857, and while there determined to become a minister. After studying at Phillips Exeter Academy, he entered Harvard Divinity School, from which he graduated in 1864.
Immediately thereafter came an invitation to supply for three months the pulpit of the Second Unitarian Church of Brooklyn. Chadwick accepted and made so favorable an impression that he was called to the permanent pastorate, which he held for the rest of his life. Alert and eager, he had the courage of his convictions, and spoke from his pulpit against oppression, privilege, and corrupt government. But he had also a real tenderness and sympathy under his rugged exterior, and a poetic vein, in which a certain touch of mysticism was not wanting. His sermons attracted attention, and he soon became well-known as a preacher and lecturer. A great lover of literature, especially of biography, with a ready pen, he became a reviewer for the Nation from its first volume till the last year of his life, though he wrote also for other journals. His first book to attract attention was A Book of Poems (1876), which ran into ten editions. It was a little book, reminiscent of earlier poets, but showed real poetic feeling. Other volumes followed in rapid succession, consisting of discussions of leading topics of religion, biographies of leaders of thought, and more poems. Of these works the most noteworthy were: The Bible of To-Day (1878); The Faith of Reason (1879); Some Aspects of Religion (1879); Belief and Life (1881); The Man Jesus (1883); Origin and Destiny (1883); In Nazareth Town and Other Poems (1883); A Daring Faith (1885); Charles R. Darwin (1889); Evolution and Social Reform (1890); Evolution as Related to Citizenship (1892); The Old and New Unitarian Belief (1894); Theodore Parker (1900); Wm. E. Channing (1903); Later Poems (1905).

He called himself a Radical Unitarian, meaning thereby that he rejected the miraculous and the superhuman character of Jesus and the Bible. He welcomed the doctrine of evolution while it was still generally under suspicion in religious circles.
Chadwick had a frank, open, weather-beaten countenance, and a breezy manner.
In 1865 he married Annie Horton Hathaway of Marblehead.
