John Craig earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1970 and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1972.
In 1979 John Craig became an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Earlier that year the photographer had served as a visiting artist at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. From 1975 to 1978 John Craig was a photography instructor at Franconia College in New Hampshire and from 1972 to 1975 held the same position at Pensacola Junior College in Florida. At his alma mater, the University of Florida, he was a teaching assistant from 1970 to 1972.
