John Crome was born on December 22, 1768 in Norwich, England. He was a son of a weaver.
At the age of sixteen, John studied art under the guidance of Francis Whisler, who was a sign painter. Some time later, he received the instruction from William Beechey, an English portraitist.
After John's studies under Francis Whisler, he befriended Robert Ladbrooke, a landscape painter. In 1803, Crome and Ladbrooke established the Norwich School of painters, a group, that also included Robert Dixon, Charles Hodgson, Daniel Coppin, James Stark and George Vincent. In fact, it was the first provincial art movement in Britain and became an important contributor to the tradition of English landscape painting. Initially, the School started as a club in a local tavern, where artists could meet to discuss artistic ideas and technique. Within 2 years, they had moved to their own premises, where they worked and exhibited together. In 1805, the group of painters held their first exhibition.
Between 1806 and 1818, Crome held several exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Also, during his lifetime, the painter served as a teacher at Norwich School. James Stark and Edward Thomas Daniell were among his students.
