John W. Danford was born on April 24, 1947, in Racine, Wisconsin, United States. He is the son of William Bradford and Elinor Jean (Storms) Danford.
John Danford began his studies at Dartmouth College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude in 1969. Then he went to the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1971. After that, he got a Master of Philosophy degree at Yale University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1976 at the same educational establishment.
John Danford, before receiving his doctor's degree, in 1975 became William Rainey Harper postdoctoral teaching fellow at the University of Chicago. Three years later, he went to the University of Houston and was an assistant professor till 1984, the year he became an associate professor. From 1991 till 1993, he was a professor of political science and then took the same position at Loyola University Chicago. Now, he is a professor emeritus at the university.
Besides his teaching career, he is actively engaged in writing. His research interests include political theory (ancient, modern, and contemporary) and philosophy of science and social science. His first book, Wittgenstein and Political Philosophy, was published in 1978. David Hume and the Problem of Reason was published in 1990. He is also the author of the book Roots of Freedom: A Primer on Modern Liberty and of articles in the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, and Political Research Quarterly.
