Kathryn Matthew was born on October 21, 1950, in Oakland, California, United States. She is the daughter of Robert E. and Evelyn (Hymel) Ingraham.
Kathryn Matthew attended the University of New Orleans where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in 1972 and a Master of Education degree in 1988. Later she went to the University of Houston and obtained a Doctor of Education degree in 1995.
Kathryn Matthew, after receiving her education degree in 1988, began her career as a teacher and technology specialist for public schools working till 1989 in Luling, Louisiana. From 1992 till 1994 she held the same position in Alief, Texas. After obtaining a doctor's degree in 1995, she joined Louisiana Tech University as an associate professor holding this position till 2002.
After working at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, in 2005 Matthew joined the University of Houston-Clear Lake as a tenured associate professor and the coordinator of the Literacy, Language, and Literature Studies Program at the School of Education. From 2005 to 2010, she was the director of the Greater Houston Area Writing Project. In 2010 she became a professor of reading and language arts and was interim associate dean till 2014, the year she returned to her teaching position. Now Matthew also holds the post of the associate vice president for Academic Affairs at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
Matthew began writing books in the 1990s. The first book Technology, Reading, and Language Arts (1996) written with Jerry Willis and Elizabeth Stephens introduced teacher education students to the use of information technologies for literacy instruction and presented a series of conceptual frameworks for thinking about how technology can support instruction. Neal-Schuman Guide to Recommended Children's Books and Media for Use with Every Elementary Subject, published in 2002, is an exhaustive, one-stop resource for any librarian or teacher seeking to meet current national educational standards and integrate high-quality children's literature into everyday learning. One more book, published in 2002, was Colonial America in Literature for Youth: A Guide and Resource Book.
With Kimberly Kimbell-Lopez she also wrote Reading Comprehension: Books and Strategies for the Elementary Curriculum (2003) which provides teachers and librarians with a collection of strategies combined with current children's literature to help students to learn and remember content area curriculum. Written with Joy L. Lowe, Neal-Schuman Guide to Celebrations and Holidays around the World (2004) is a comprehensive handbook containing the best materials, insights, and suggestions for teaching kids about holidays celebrated throughout the world. Grouped by month, and with chapters on year-round special events, this innovative and easy-to-use guide provides grade-specific advice on books, media, and activities that allow children to learn how people of various nationalities and religions celebrate holidays.
The other books are Discoveries and Inventions in Literature for Youth: A Guide and Resource Book, Developing Better Readers and Writers Using Caldecott Books, and Puppet Magic.
Matthew and her coauthors rely on their public school teaching experiences for ideas for their books. As they write they talk with librarians and classroom teachers.
