(Truths and Untruths of Evolution written by John Benjamin...)
Truths and Untruths of Evolution written by John Benjamin Drury is an interesting look at the science and theory of evolution through a religious lens. The book features several lectures that were originally delivered before the students of the Theological Seminary in New Brunswick and at Rutgers College. Each lecture tackles the subject of evolution and is a masterful attempt to dissect the truth of evolution from the myriad of false theories (as Drury sees them). Running as a central theme throughout the lectures, Drury's main argument concerns the co-existence of the theory of Evolution and religious belief. In particular, Drury highlights the misconception of mutual exclusion between the two and argues that, "In the discussion I have sought to be just and fair to science as well as to religion. As the reader will see, instead of combating Evolution as altogether inadmissible, I concede a possibility of its truthfulness, and aim to show that a believer in God and a Revelation has nothing to fear from it as a foe to religion, when its postulates are freed from assumptions, and its truths are separated from its untruths." John Benjamin Drury's book Truths and Untruths of Evolution is an intriguing read for individuals exploring evolution theory and science through the eyes of religion. Can the two co-exist? For Drury they can and he hopes to prove that to any reader who picks up this text. This book is definitely an exciting read for scholars of religion, science, and those with only a passing interest in either topic. John Benjamin Drury was born in Rhinebeck, New York, United States on August 15, 1838. He was the son of Alfred and Maria Ann (Schultz) Drury.
Drury graduated from Rutgers College in 1858 and from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1861, was licensed to preach by the Classis of Poughkeepsie, and gained his first ministerial experience in home mission work in Davenport.
While attending year in and year out to the duties of a rural minister, he found time for study and reflection and grew steadily too in the esteem of his colleagues.
In 1883 Drury was the Vedder lecturer at the College and Seminary in New Brunswick; in 1885 he taught in the summer school of the American Institute of Christian Philosophy; and in 1886 he was president of the General Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church.
He had risen to a position of influence rather through his common sense and trustworthiness, his courtesy and friendly, helpful disposition, than through any showier gifts, for he was not a notably good speaker and had written but little.
In 1884 he had published a small book on Truths and Untruths of Evolution, which was regarded as somewhat liberal in tendency, and which had shown many a Reformed clergyman that religion was not served by vilifying Charles Darwin and attempting to impugn solidly established facts.
Two parish histories and a few articles had also come from his pen, but writing was for him arduous labor.
To the end of his life he composed with difficulty, and his articles Dryden were characterized more by an obvious effort to be clear and accurate than by any grace of style.
In 1887 he resigned his charge and, with the issue of December 7, assumed the editorship of the Christian Intelligencer.
The Intelligencer had recently passed through bankruptcy and, confronted by the growing competition of secular newspapers and magazines, faced a severe struggle for survival. Its continuance seemed essential to the welfare of the Reformed Church. Drury undertook to keep the paper alive.
For a long time he had a deficit to deal with at the end of each year, but he persisted in spite of discouragements and ultimately made the paper self-supporting.
On the literary side the Intelligencer maintained a high standard among religious journals.
