In 1965 John received Bachelor of Arts at Dartmouth College. Then he studied at Stanford University, where he earned Master of Arts and Doctor of Education in 1975.
In 1972 - 1977 John served as an assistant professor of political science in University of New Mexico. Then he held that position in St. John’s University in 1977 - 1980. After that he began to work in Long Island University, where he was an associate professor in 1980 - 1985, and Professor of political science since 1985.
John describes himself as a left-socialist.
On November 16, 1968, John married Kathleen Golding, with whom he has two children: Cassie and David Ehrenberg.
