John J. Flanders was born 1847 at Glencoe, Illinois, United States.
Mr. Flanders began his professional career in Chicago early in life. After working for a time as draftsman, he joined the late Charles Furst (whom he had known while employed with the firm of Burling & Adler) in forming a partnership and for a short period practiced in that association. He withdrew later to accept the position of Architect to the newly organized Chicago Board of Education, and during the eight years he held that office personally designed a large number of the schools built in the city during the nineties.
Resuming private practice in 1898 Mr. Flanders was associated for a few years with W. C. Zimmerman, but in later years maintained an independent office. Among his early works was the Mellers Office and Bank Building, completed in 1874, the first business structure in the city to be built to the height of twelve stories, and considered at that time "a monument of architectural skill (*). In later years the building was re-named the LaSalle Trust & Savings Bank. He was also architect of the old Haymarket Theatre opened in 1884 at the corner of Quincy and LaSalle Streets.
Flanders became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1889.
