John Foster attended Denstone College in Uttoxeter. He then received his Bachelor of Arts in 1963 and his Master of Arts in 1968 from Brasenose College in Oxford.
John Foster was head of the English department at Redefield School in Oxford, United Kingdom from 1968 to 1977. He then was a tutor of the Department of Educational Studies at Oxford University in Oxford during 1975-1976 and 1984-1985.
From 1977 to 1984 Foster was a teacher at Lord Williams’s School in Thame, United Kingdom, later became a teacher and deputy head of curriculum in 1985-1988.
John Foster was a part-time advisory English teacher in Oxfordshire between 1988 and 1991. From 1991 he was a part-time associate tutor at Westminster College in Oxford.
For over twenty years John Foster has written poetry for children. He began writing his own poetry during the 1980s under the pseudonym Derek Stuart, but dropped the pen name when his first book of original poetry "Four O’Clock Friday" was published in 1991.
His poetry anthologies present children with original and contemporary poetry, proving that poetry is both accessible and fun. His books include First Verses for the Very Young, My First Oxford Book of Poems, My First Book of Animal Poems, The Poetry Chest, My Oxford Book of Christmas Poems, Twinkle, Twinkle Chocolate Bar, Dinosaur Poems, Monster Poems, Dragon Poems, Fantastic Football Poems and Pet Poems.
Since he gave up teaching, he has visited lots of schools and libraries to perform his poems and has performed at the Cheltenham Festival, the Edinburgh Festival and the Oxford Literary Festival.
Currently, Foster lives in an Oxfordshire village. In addition to writing poems and editing poetry, he also spends his time writing textbooks and information books.
