Hamilton, John was born on February 19, 1843 in Juniata Company, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Hugh and Sarah Gettys (McDowell) Hamilton.

Bachelor of Science, Pennsylvania State College, 1871, M.A.S., 1872.

Career

Was member Juniata cavalry before Civil War. Served in 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Vol. Cavalry, 1861-1864, private to sergeant major, in Army of Potomac.

Professor agriculture, 1871-1880, business manager and treasurer, 1874-1886, treasurer, 1874-1911, Pennsylvania State College Deputy secretary agriculture of Pennsylvania, 1895-1899, secretary agriculture of Pennsylvania, 1899-1903. Farmers’ institute specialist, unites states department of Agriculture, 1903-January 1, 1914. Director Thompson Land & Coal Company.
