(Why does Christianity feel the need to impose its customs...)
Why does Christianity feel the need to impose its customs and beliefs on the rest of the world? And why has an impulse driven at least partially by sincere concern for the "salvation" of others so often played into the hands of ruthless colonizers with more cynical aims? Bringing together scholars in literature, history, and religion, Christian Encounters with the Other Approaches these questions by analyzing literary accounts of historically famous sites of conversion.

Uses postcolonial theory to critique the globalization of gay culture. These thirteen essays address possible ramifications arising from the globalization of western notions of gay and lesbian identities. Examining postcolonial literature, economics, and psychology from a “queer” perspective leads to self-reflexive consideration of the canonization of postcolonial studies and queer theory in western academe.

2001John C. Hawley told: “I was a Jesuit for twenty-nine years and, although I have since left the order, I continue to be fascinated by what I learned to consider occasions for grace — the encounter with those experiences or individuals who can be perceived as ‘other.’ Thus, in my research and writing I am interested in exploring voices that may be said to transcend one’s ordinary experience, voices that may be marginalized (or marginalizing), voices that challenge one’s view of one’s identity and capacities. This has taken the shape of religious voices in the history of Christianity and, more recently, in contemporary conflicts between modernity and some versions of Islam. It has also manifested itself in voices in literature from emerging nations, voices concerned with the disruption on globalization and western hegemony."
