John Kovalic was born Robert John Kovalic, Jr. on November 24, 1962, in Manchester, United Kingdom.
John Kovalic grew up around comic strips and learned to read from them. Since high school, he has worked on something comics-related.
He was educated at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
John Kovalic began making comic strips just at school and he had enough of them to self-publish a compilation, Wild Life: The Cardinal Collection, after finishing studies. "Wild Life" ran daily in syndication for ten years. In the mid-1980s, Kovalic also began freelancing as an editorial cartoonist for Capital Times, the local Madison newspaper.
Kovalic's Dork Tower comic book series was launched in June 1998. A comical though sympathetic series about a group of role-playing gamers, it has made Kovalic very popular in the comic book world. The comic strips first appeared in various published and online gaming magazines and gained a following.
His other known comic strips include Beached, Newbies, and Murphy's Rules. His comic strips appeared in newspapers and magazines, including Games, Dragon, and Scrye. Kovalic's editorial cartoons appeared regularly in Wisconsin State Journal, New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post.
A co-founder and co-owner of Out of the Box Publishing and a cartoonist for Steve Jackson Games, Kovalic has also illustrated over 100 games and game supplements and is at least in part responsible for best-sellers like Apples to Apples, Munchkin, Chez Geek, and Blink.
