Kate Salley Palmer was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States in 1946.
Palmer graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in 1968.
During her long career, Palmer was the state's first full-time newspaper editorial cartoonist (The Greenville News) from 1975 to 1984 and was nationally syndicated - winning the Freedom Foundation's Award for Editorial Cartoons in 1980. In the early 90's she began writing and illustrating children's picture books and currently she works as a freelance writer and illustrator, living in Clemson, South Carolina.
Kate Palmer is best known as a cartoonist and award-winning author. During her career, she has had over 20 published books by national and regional publishers, including Simon and Schuster, Boyds Mills Press and Albert Whitman. One of her recent books, Almost Invisible - Black Patriots of the American Revolution, was a 2009 finalist in SIBA's (Southeastern Independent Booksellers Alliance) Children's Book category. Kate's most recent non-fiction picture book (May 2013) is First South Carolinians, about the early Native Americans of South Carolina. In the Fall of 2013, Kate wrote and illustrated I Know Santa Very Well, a poem about unconditional love.
